Giving

I believe I should give something back to the world for all the good it has done to me.
I believe humans have a special responsibility because they can tell right from wrong.
I believe that individual change is the key to global change. What you do DOES matter.

Hi, I’m Norman. Just like you I have all the regular things I do, like work and all that. This page here (including the other ‘tabs’) are about what might be a little bit different about me. Otherwise I have much the same dreams as most other people do, do the same things and just like to have fun, party and hang out. Now comes a little piece of non-party, which I hope you will be able to read with an open mind.

I’m going to write about what I think is a very important topic: To reduce the amount of meat that we’re eating. Most people reduce the amount of animal products they eat. The public has recognized just how harmful it is – and how good you can feel by not eating or using them.

While a decade ago, it was still considered somewhat strange not to eat meat, today it is commonplace. As people become more informed about what really happens, they re-evaluate their behavior and traditions. So did I.

As a kid, everyone loves animals, and then we somehow seem to lose this bond – we ‘learn’ that it is okay to exploit and kill them. We limit our affection to cats and dogs, almost every other animal seems to become more of a ‘convenient commodity’. For a while, that may be understandable: So many things are new to a teenager or young adult, you have a lot of other things to worry about. And the truth about what is going on is well hidden by those who profit by running todays concentration camps.

What is the most important aspect in my humble opinion is this: While most people have the impression that their contribution does not make a difference, it really does! No, you won’t change everything all at once, but if you did not eat any meat your entire life, fact is that you’d save the lives of about 3.000 land animals and over 5.000 sea animals! For those individual animals, you are the most important person conceivable! People feel good saving one puppy, while you can save thousands of animals just by not eating them. It sounds almost strange – that every single one of us has so much power at their hands, and that it is this easy to be a real hero!

And: Every little step counts. Becoming a vegetarian is so easy, you’ll be surprised! Just take a minute to think about what you eat. Keep your favorite dish as it is, but turn everything else into vegetarian ones.
(if you are thinking about what is most effective for reducing suffering, you should stop eating chicken, eggs and (fish-farmed) fish)

And one more word on milk: Soy milk used to be horrible – but it got so much better in the last 10 years, with so many varieties that you WILL like one of them (and probably like it better than regular milk!)

Yes, I want you to become a vegetarian – but I, personally, have nothing to gain – no lobby, no self-interest and I don’t want your money or email-address.

If you have issues or worries about one of the following, please ask me about it:
- But where do I get my protein?
- Do I need to take pills to make up for some vitamins?
- How do I change my diet (Norman, make it easy for me please! :) )
- What do I tell people / my family
- I can’t say no to cheese (or something else)

Below I put a link where you can read more and I’ll address the issues above. But I will always take time to personally answer all your questions – all I need is for you to have an open mind.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING! If you have any suggestions about what sounds funny, is missing or too much – please let me know.

Norman
